Recent years have seen tremendous growth in molecular diagnostics—a $4 billion industry that is predicted to grow to $6 billion by 2014.
As personalized medicine becomes more widely implemented, targeted therapies are increasingly relying on companion diagnostics to identify appropriate patients for treatment. Nearly one-third of drugs in late clinical development rely on companion diagnostics, compared to 60% of drugs in preclinical development—a 100% increase in therapies coming down the pipeline that are linked to a molecular diagnostic. Further, some innovative academic medical centers are developing their own genetic panels to target patient treatment.
In the rapidly changing world of personalized medicine, providers must ask themselves, "What do payers think?"

Six new hospitals have joined the Commission on Cancer’s ProvenCare Lung Cancer Collaborative, doubling the number of sites participating in the pilot study.
Started in 2010, the Lung Cancer Collaborative uses Geisinger Health Care's ProvenCare model to provide evidence-based treatment for patients with non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) who are candidates for lung resections. Participating hospitals provide treatment according to a care pathway containing 38 standardized elements provided by interdisciplinary teams from the preoperative to postoperative period.
