Executive Summary

As the hospital environment becomes increasingly busy and complex, nurse leaders often find themselves lacking the time and resources to apply their problem-solving skills. In fact, traditional techniques—such as formal root cause analysis—can themselves become a laborious undertaking. To assist managers and directors in streamlining their problem-solving processes, the Nursing Executive Center is pleased to present The Manager’s Problem-Solving Toolkit: Techniques and Templates for Addressing Complex Challenges.

This collection of ready-to-use, easily applied tools takes a fresh, efficient approach to well-established methodologies, encouraging inventive solutions and applications. Modeled after the Center’s 2004 publication The Nursing Strategy Toolkit—which was designed to support the nursing department’s strategic planning process—our latest Nursing Executive Center publication brings a similar framework to bear on unit-level problem solving, and is intended for unit and department leaders who have pinpointed a specific issue that they wish to address.
