While service line management has always hinged on effective service line leadership, preparing service lines for risk-based payments will elevate the importance of the service line leader’s role. In particular, transformation will require service line leaders to develop and implement a strategic vision for the service line.
For service line leaders to successfully make this transition, they will need to elevate their role beyond an operational focus. Organizations should ensure that service line leaders have sufficient operational support to dedicate time to achieving strategic goals.
In addition, organizations should seek (whether through training or hiring) service line leaders who can effectively lead strategic efforts, including managing change and building partnerships beyond the acute care setting. For many service line leaders, this will represent a significant change in responsibility, requiring a new mindset and, potentially, a new job description.
