A recent article in the September-October 2010 RBMA Bulletin discusses the importance of reducing equipment servicing costs to protect imaging center and hospital margins. The article presents equipment maintenance insurance (EMI) as a cost-saving alternative to full original equipment manufacturer (OEM) service contracts. Across the 2010 Imaging Performance Partnership research on equipment servicing, members related both pros and cons to this type of coverage ranging from reports of rather significant savings to comments on poor service and increased downtime. Nevertheless, examining EMI more carefully may reveal the potential for savings for some institutions well positioned for this type of arrangement.
