There's an app for that, too! The American College of Radiology announced in April 2010 the release of their "ACR Appropriateness Criteria Anytime, Anywhere" application for smart phones, which they developed in collaboration with Skyscape (a company that creates medical reference tools specifically for mobile devices).

The application is designed to work with the iPhone, BlackBerry, Palm products, and other smart phones or PDAs, and is touted on the ACR website as "an authoritative alternative to radiology benefits management companies or computerized physician order entry systems that do not contain the ACR Appropriateness Criteria guidance." To learn more, visit the ACR website.

This development ties in nicely with some of the research we are currently conducting on utilization management: encouraging physicians to order imaging tests appropriately and judiciously remains a top issue for many hospitals and health systems.
