Executive Summary
What is meaningful use?
"Meaningful use" of certified electronic health records (EHR) technology refers to the Medicare and Medicaid EHR Incentive Programs for eligible physicians (EPs) and eligible hospitals as included in the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009. The program incentivizes physicians and hospitals to acquire and employ certified EHR technology to improve health care quality and coordination. Participants in the program must not only acquire certified EHR technology but must also demonstrate meaningful use of that technology by complying with a set of measures developed by the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS).
Deadlines for incentives coming soon
To receive up to $44,000 in incentives, eligible radiologists must begin demonstrating meaningful use by 2012. Furthermore, starting in 2015, Medicare will begin reducing payments to those eligible radiologists who have not demonstrated meaningful use.
Members, learn more
Over the past year, the Partnership has received myriad questions from both radiologists and radiology department leaders looking for guidance on how to qualify for incentives in the programs. We have compiled a comprehensive guide, updated to reflect the recently released Stage Two Proposed Rulemaking, to provide members with answers to these frequently asked questions regarding eligibility, data collection, and certified technology.
