Already the dominant alignment model in health care, hospital employment of physicians continues to grow. Merritt Hawkins, a national physician search and consulting firm, reports that 56% of physician searches across 2010 featured hospital employment – up from only 23% five years earlier—and this trend will only continue. A recent HealthLeaders survey found that 74% of hospitals plan to employ more physicians in the next 12 to 36 months. As a result, new hires will represent a significant portion of the physician workforce and many hospitals and health systems will see physicians with less than three years tenure become an outright majority within their employed group.
