CMS on Tuesday named 73 health care experts who will participate in its "Innovation Advisors Program," which will support individuals who seek to pilot and refine innovative payment and delivery models.

Specifically, the initiative—which was launched in October 2011—will help participating experts cultivate the skills required to lead health system improvements and reduce costs. After an orientation phase, advisors will work with the CMS Innovation Center to pilot health care delivery models in their local communities and create partnerships that can foster and disseminate successful ideas.

After receiving more than 900 applications, CMS selected the first group of advisors, which represents 27 states and the District of Columbia and includes health care administrators, clinicians, and allied health professionals. According to a CMS factsheet, the agency considered an individual's career achievements, their pre-existing skill set, the quality of their proposed innovation project, and their home organization's commitment to their work.

Each advisor's organization will receive up to $20,000 to support the individual's activities during their participation. Funding for the initiative is provided by the federal health reform law.

"There has been an incredible groundswell of interest in becoming an Innovation Advisor," says CMS Acting Administrator Marilyn Tavenner. "It's clear that doctors, hospitals, and health care providers are enthusiastic about implementing the Affordable Care Act and strengthening our health care system."

The Innovation Advisors Program will select up to 200 participants within its first year. The agency is expected to reopen applications in Spring 2012 and select remaining advisors by June (CMS release, 1/3; CMS factsheet, 1/3; Zigmond, Modern Healthcare, 1/3 [subscription required]; Baker, "Healthwatch," The Hill, 1/3).
